E-Invoice 2025
The Future of Invoicing: The E-Invoice
Effective January 1, 2025, the e-invoice will become mandatory in Germany for VAT-registered companies. This legal requirement aims to advance digitalization in the economy, simplify processes, and increase transparency in financial transactions. The focus is not only on efficiency but also on contributing to sustainable practices by reducing paper consumption.
As of January 1, 2025, companies are not yet required to generate outgoing invoices as “e-invoices,” but only need to be able to receive e-invoices; there is a transitional period until December 31, 2026, or 2027, for the mandatory generation of e-invoices.
The introduction of the e-invoice is a milestone in the modernization of business transactions. It facilitates the standardization of electronic invoice exchange and promotes the transition to a fully digital single market. Companies benefit from faster data exchange and reduced administrative effort – a win-win situation for the economy and the environment.
